Leia will be in rehab for awhile as we work on getting her back to good health.

Asia

Age:Unknown
Sex:Female
Species:Moluccan Cockatoo
Status:Available for Adoption

Asia’s story is very sad. From what history we were able to piece together, she started off life as a community bird in a college dorm. After that she was aquired by an individual who kept her at the back of a flee market where she was found and purchased by her last caregivers. They did what they could to help her but were not prepared for what needed to be done. They brought Asia to The Bailey Foundation so she could get as much help as she would need.

When Asia arrived, we noticed that her right wing was drooping down and the feathers on that wing were pointing out and away from her body so we took her to our vet right away. Asia was diagnosed with multiple fractures of the right wing as well as severe muscle and tendon damage at the shoulder. The vet stated that this was an old injury, approximately 3 to 4 years old. The bone had calcified and there was no way to save the wing. Asia is having her wing amputated today and will need a few months rehab to recover from her ordeal. Because of the pain and discomfort she has been enduring, she is also plucking her feathers. Luckily there is no self mutilation.

Asia is a very scared bird as well. If you approach her she gets very nervous and begins to shake. If you sit with her and talk softly to her she will calm down and begine to talk back to you. After awhile we are able to pet her head but the minute we try to get her to step up she gets scared and tries to hide.

Hopefully, after her surgery and healing process she will learn that there are people that will not scare her or hurt her.

Update: Asia is doing great. We have removed her collar a couple of weeks ago and she has preened all her feathers open. She has started to come out of the cage and loves to cuddle with anyone. She is still trying to learn to balance with only one wing but is getting around just fine. We feel she is now ready to go to a new home. If you are interested in Asia, please contact The Bailey Foundation.

Buddy

Age:14 Years
Sex:Male
Species:Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo
Status:In Rehabilitation

Buddy came to us from a very loving home where there was a lifestyle change and Buddy did not take to it very well. He plucked himself and was obviously not happy. His previous owners made the decision that they would give Buddy up to the foundation for rehab and eventually placement in a good home.

Buddy will be going through rehabilitation for awhile while we help him overcome his plucking problem. It has also been awhile since he has physically interacted with people and has developed a fear of people that needs to be overcome.

If you are interested in Buddy and would like to help him during his rehabilitation, contact The Bailey Foundation.

Update: Buddy seems to be a good natured bird who craves human contact. He is learning to trust people again, but sometimes bites out of fear. In the past few months, he has come to trust people and allows petting of his beak, chest, head and legs through the cage bars. His behavior remains unpredictable, however, and he would do best in a home with a seasoned bird owner, where he will receive consistent love and attention. He LOVES to chew and destroy wooden toys, and as long as he has a supply of these, he leaves his feathers alone.
